You know the feeling. You open social media on a Tuesday morning and someone has already posted about the season premiere of the show you've been waiting eight months for. Maybe they're vague. Maybe they're not. Either way, the moment is gone — you found out with everyone else, not before them.
That's the gap Season Countdown Alerts are designed to close.
What it does
For any show on your watchlist that's marked Watching or Want to Watch, ReelRifter quietly tracks the next season premiere date. When that date is 30 days away, you get an alert. Then again at 14 days. Then again at 7 days.
By the time premiere week rolls around, you've had three nudges. You've had time to:
- Rewatch the last few episodes of the previous season so the cliffhanger lands again
- Clear your weekend
- Mute the show's hashtag if you want to stay dark on early reviews
- Decide whether you're caught up enough to actually watch it the night it drops
You're not finding out from a stranger's reaction post. You're walking in ready.
How it works
The countdown is automatic. There's nothing to configure beyond having the show on your watchlist.
- Add a TV show to your watchlist (status Watching or Want to Watch)
- ReelRifter checks daily for the next season premiere date across every show on every active watchlist
- When a premiere falls inside the 30 / 14 / 7-day window, an alert lands in your Notifications page under New Season Countdowns
- The alert shows the show poster, season number, premiere date, and exactly how many days you have left to prepare
If a premiere date shifts (which happens — networks reshuffle constantly), the alert updates with the new countdown. If the premiere gets pulled or pushed past your alert window, the entry quietly drops off.
Why three alerts, not one
The first version of this we sketched only sent a single alert seven days out. We changed our minds for two reasons.
Thirty days is rewatch time. A 30-day heads-up is what you need if you're the kind of person who likes to revisit the previous season before a new one starts. Trying to cram a 10-episode rewatch into the final week before a premiere doesn't work; getting flagged a month out does.
Seven days is calendar time. A week out is when you decide whether premiere night is a "watch it live" event or a "save it for the weekend" one. It's also when spoiler avoidance kicks in — you start scrolling more carefully, you stop opening reviews from outlets that drop screeners early.
Fourteen days is the in-between — a reminder that the rewatch you meant to start is now overdue, and a chance to course-correct.
Three alerts means none of them have to do all the work.
The spoiler angle
Premiere spoilers are different from regular spoilers. A regular spoiler is "I shouldn't have read that recap." A premiere spoiler is "I didn't even know the season was out." That second one is worse — you didn't get a chance to defend yourself, because you didn't know there was anything to defend against.
A countdown alert flips the timeline. You know first. You set your guard up before the spoiler-fueled internet knows you have anything to protect. And on premiere night, you're not the person reacting to other people's reactions — you're the person watching it cold.
How to turn it on
Season Countdown Alerts are part of Pro (and bundled into Pro + Sports and Family). If you're already on a Pro plan, they're already on — there's nothing to enable. Just check Notifications the next time you load ReelRifter and you'll see your countdowns waiting under New Season Countdowns.
Not on Pro yet? Compare what's included on the Pricing page. The countdown alerts sit alongside the rest of the proactive notification stack — leaving-soon, newly-available, person/creator project alerts, the Morning Brief — so the same upgrade unlocks all of them.
What's next
A few things we're already working on:
- Push notifications for the 7-day alert, so you don't have to remember to open the app
- Custom alert windows — pick your own thresholds if 30/14/7 doesn't match your prep style
- Per-show overrides for the handful of shows where you want a longer or shorter runway
In the meantime, the in-app countdowns are live for everyone on Pro. Add the shows you care about to your watchlist, sit back, and let ReelRifter tap you on the shoulder before the internet does.
Premiere night belongs to you again. 🎬
